A crew of seasoned musicians and rising talents, the ‘stars’ of Simply Live represent the axis of our live house.  

Comprised of five vocalists and five musicians, our resident band performs an extensive setlist, ranging from classic tunes to the latest Mandopop hits. Regardless of whether you’re a fan of R&B, soul, fusion or rock, you are in for a treat at Simply Live by Tin Box in KL.

Simply Live is a platform for all members to explore music genres out of their comfort zone, so they can stand on their own and represent our country on the international stage in the future

VOCALISTS

A music major, Hoyee started performing live at various venues in 2017. She has racked up notable performances, including a collaboration with 8TV artists for the 2018 CNY album and was crowned champion at the 2019 Changwon Kpop World Festival. She best expresses herself and connects with her audience through ballads and indie acoustic music.

A familiar face at singing contests, Scott is blessed with a warm and resonant voice. Apart from being picked as the Top 12 contestants in 8TV's The Ultimate Song (非常好歌) competition in 2014, Scott was the finalist in The Voice of China (The Malaysia Audition) for three consecutive years, from 2014-2016. A self-professed enthusiast of R&B, hip hop, alternative rock and pop, Scott’s career highlights include a guest appearance at Mandopop artiste Olivia Ong’s concert in 2012.

An R&B singer-songwriter known for her sultry, silky-smooth vocals, Karmun has written a few original tracks, including the popular 《thinking bout you》,《saturyay》and 《蝴蝶》, which have amassed over 285,000 streams in total. Karmun has collaborated with fellow local singer-songwriter and Malaysian Idol winner Daniel Lee to release the compilation album《路》. In 2019 and 2020, she was invited to perform at the Spring Festival TV programme in Guangzhou and Nan Ning, and the Nan Ning Music Festival. R&B aside, Karmun’s favourite genres include soul and jazz, and she draws inspiration from soul divas Jill Scott and Jorja Smith, as well as R&B star Daniel Caesar.

Known for his signature rich and powerful vocals, Xing Mars launched his singing career as a lead vocalist in 2010. Drawing inspiration for his performing style from legendary rock duo Power Station (动力火车), his affable personality has garnered him a loyal fan base. He is an incredibly sought-after vocalist for live gigs and corporate events. Never one to shy away from the spotlight, Xing Mars finds the greatest joy in interacting with his audience.

To fulfil a childhood dream, June left a desk job to become a full-time singer in 2010. Her compelling vocals and soulful style reflect her favoured music genres - R&B and Neo-Soul, and her favourite artiste Tia Ray (袁娅维). Over the years, she has notched numerous live performance experiences, as a guest singer for Mandopop artistes like Peace Teo (張和平) and as a solo performer for her concert “June 六月'' held in 2016. She also emerged in the top 6 in The Voice of China (The Malaysia Audition). To hone her vocal skills, she took part in Shila Amzah's masterclass and snagged the rare opportunity to perform with the vocal powerhouse.

MUSICIANS

An experienced sessionist, David has worked with notable artistes such as Mandopop stars Michael Wong (光良) and Penny Tai (戴佩妮), and vocal powerhouse Shila Amzah. An early bloomer, David picked up percussion and the drums at the age of 6. He cites veteran drummer Gary Gideon, award-winning percussionist John Ashley Thomas and Swiss virtuoso drummer Jojo Mayer as his inspirations. A sought-after drummer for live gigs and corporate events, David was a regular at now-defunct KL hotspots like No Black Tie, Bangkok Jazz, and NeroFico. To enhance his musicianship, he pursued drum masterclasses with Gideon and Malaysian drummer extraordinaire Martin Ngim.

DAVID NOOI
A talented pianist and keyboardist, Lee Peng graduated with first-class honours in jazz piano and clinched the top spot at the 2012 Roland Piano Festival in the Pop and Jazz category. The Roland-endorsed artist has performed at local and international concerts, including the WA Meets Jazz Festival in Tokyo, and the 30th Anniversary of Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Perth. She regularly steps up her game by taking part in reality music shows like The Voice Malaysia/Singapore and The Masked Singer. Also a piano teacher at Klang Valley-based Bentley Music Academy, Lee Peng hopes her music can inspire and resonate with her audience.

What started as a hobby when he was 12-year-old turned into a calling for guitarist Jia Cherng (JC). JC graduated from ESP Entertainment Academy Japan (Tokyo) with a diploma in contemporary music (Electric Guitar). Highlights from his music career include a six-month touring stint in Japan as a session guitarist for a Japanese hard rock band. The value of teamwork is one of the life lessons he gained from this experience. JC draws inspiration from J-rock, and his styles and techniques also reflect influences from hip hop, jazz, blues, and heavy metal.

A relative newcomer to the music scene, Chung Jien (CJ)’s deft guitar skills caught the eye of industry veterans like music director Lee Nai Kong who says his artistry is “mature beyond his age.”  Although his guitar journey began in 2017, CJ has been making his rounds, from bar gigs and jazz clubs to musical theatres, to pad up his portfolio. He cites renowned guitarists Allen Hinds and Michiya Haruhata as inspiration. CJ’s specialties include jazz fusion, blues, fingerstyle, and rock.

CURRYPOP

Inspired by a local Singaporean delight, the Curry Puff (also known endearingly to the locals as “Curry Pok”, CurryPop was born in 2016. An acoustic duo that comprises of Daniel Ong and Seow Ting, they aim to bring tasty and fresh music with a proud local flavour, much akin to their quirky band name.

SUNNYCAZ

Join Niesan & Caz, the acoustic duo – SunnyCaz, who will bring you unplugged covers in harmony. Caz first started out in local music cafes (民歌餐廳) as a singer-guitarist. The two recently formed an acoustic duo in 2021 through collaboration for charity and busking performances. Caz’s rich warm vocals complements Niesan’s sweet melodic voice. Niesan’s passion for music started at a young age through her love for classics that transcends time.

Effectively multilingual, Niesan has been sought after for demo-singing and wedding performances. In 2017, she entered the preliminaries of《The Voice 决战好声》and received accolades from all four judges. In 2021, Niesan released a debut single《1+1》ft. local songwriter Derrick Tham, which is available on Spotify and all music platforms.

MUSIC HEART BAND

Brenda, Huiyi and Chloe are part of Music Heart Band, a homegrown acoustic band. Collectively, the talented trio comes with over 3 years of experience in live shows, singing contests and busking. Their wide repertoire ranges from evergreen classics to current Mandopop and English hits. They have collaborated with seasoned composers and producers like 郑同学 (Zheng Jianxing), Bear Lew and 冼佩瑾 (Celeste Syn), to produce originals like 《三年多》, 《慢慢》and 《问题是，戒不掉你》.

Thanks to their busking gigs, Music Heart Band is known for their engaging shows and warm chemistry with audiences from all walks of life.
